NHL Besties

So! The idea for this post came from the "controversy" of the Washington-New Jersey game the other night when apparently after the game (in the hallway), Ovechkin and Semin met up with their Team Russia друг (I totally looked up how to saw friend in Russian) Kovalchuk and started catching up and laughing. Is anyone else saying "Uhhh... so what?"

Yeah I didn't even hear about it until they fully talked about it last night, discussing whether or not they crossed a line

You know what, I never thought I'd say this in my life and while I will never EVER like Ovechkin, this makes me hate him slightly less. Yeah, the Caps got blanked by the Devils and I'm sure Semin and Ovechkin weren't too pleased about it but it's one game in an 82 game season, I like that they are able to leave their jobs on the ice and catch up with a friend (it's no longer funny to use the Russian word for it). You can see Bruce Boudreau's displeasure when they were interviewing him (because the bestie reunion was happening just around the corner from it or something and you could hear the guys giggling and gossiping) but geeze, cut them some slack, I think they are allowed to have friends outside the team. Maybe not the smartest idea to have the reunion 2 feet away from a full press conference but whatever, these guys are allowed to have a life outside of hockey

This makes me think of the other NHL besties (opposing teams only, we don't need any Jeff Carter-Mike Richards bromance reminder here).

Stamkos and Del Zotto
These lil' GTA buddies grew up playing hockey together and still work out together in the summer. Del Zotto actually goes through the roster of their Markham team that apparently was just future-NHLer-central.

They also work out with Steve Downie, who has redeemed himself slightly by showing the world Del Zotto's abs. HELLO!!!! Where have you been hiding!

Crosby and Johnson
Sidney Crosby and Jack Johnson became insta-besties when they both went to boarding school at Shattuck-St Mary's in tenth grade. They still get together to this day during the rare times their teams play each other - Johnson actually wrote about it in his blog ("We beat Phoenix, jumped on the plane and back to L.A. Couple days of practice and Pittsburgh and my friend Sid came to town. Everyone makes such a big deal out of our friendship, but they really have no idea that when the puck drops nobody wants to win more than Sid and I do. Especially against each other.Bragging rights are HUGE!")

(The talk of their bromance starts about 4 minutes in)

Ryan Kesler and Chris Conner
These lil' besties grew up together in Michigan and played minor hockey together. They like Sid and JJ, their teams rarely play each other but they got to have a lil' reunion this past week when the Canucks were finishing up their Eastern road trip in Pittsburgh

John Tavares and PK Subban
These guys didn't even have a choice whether or not to be friends - Subban's dad was best friends with Tavares' uncle. Obviously they were just destined to be. They met through their families and through hockey and then besties through two stints playing for Team Canada. There was big hype for their first game against each other last month. Also, you know, Subban has been getting complained about by some of the league's stars (Mike Richards whined about him for awhile) and I wasn't too thrilled when he mouthed off Crosby but this video makes me feel differently about him. When they show him calling his dad to tell him he made Team Canada, he is just the cutest thing ever - its obvious how much he loves hockey and yeah, I like that. Shut up Mike Richards.

Jordan, Eric and Marc Staal
It's possible that it is more genetics that are keeping these guys besties throughout the games against one another (and with them all playin the the same conference and Jordan and Marc in the same division, they play each other often) but whatever, they still count. They still have pillow fights.

(Jordan should maybe think about being an artist eh?)

Of course, then Marc got jealous and acted out.

Just as a side note, we've all seen the picture of Crosby and Malkin at the Team Canada practice in Vancouver this past February so I won't post it showing their bestie-ness, but I found this other picture of the two of them that I had never seen before and just... Malkin is the cutest thing ever. What a smile.
